Bush: Military Force Against Iran An Option
Posted by Joe under International , Military , PresidentVia Yahoo! News.
“President Bush said he could consider using force as a last resort to press Iran to give up its nuclear program.”
Do we realistically even have the option? Our military is so completely spread thin that we can barely maintain stability in Iraq.
Every avalanche starts as a wee snowball.

I am currently an officer candidate and an army reservist. I am completing my masters in international business and expect to be deployed upon graduation. I want to express my deep sorrow to any person who has lost a loved one in Iraq.
With that said, I want to point out that US armed forces are the largest all volunteer military in the world. I emphasize the word ‘volunteer’. We choose to join the military for a variety of reasons. For some it’s to satisfy a sense of duty, for others it’s way to pay for school.
We know the risks, I can assure you. We don’t get to choose our mission. We follow our orders because thats what soldiers do. If you don’t like the risks, or taking orders, there’s a million other things you can do.
I just ask that you consider the men and women who are just trying to complete their mission. Whether it be to rebuild schools, distribute aid, or to find and neutralize the enemy, soldiers are valiantly accomplishing their missions.
We all want our soldiers home. Let’s let them come home as proud soldiers who have accomplished their mission. Let them make the sacrifices be for something… freedom and democracy.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for your comment. I was an active duty officer in the Army, obtaining my commission through Officer Candidate School as well and so I can certainly agree with you on many levels. When we join, we all know the risks. This doesn’t mean that we should all follow blindly. Part of what makes America work (in theory anyway) is that we all have the right to throw our opinion out there and protest what our government does. Let’s separate the dislike of the war from the ones fighting it. We can be against the policy while still loving and supporting our troops. It is the soldier’s duty to follow the orders and carry out the mission but we should never take their duty lightly and a President should use force only as a last resort, not as a form of diplomacy. A volunteer military does not mean an expendable one. Their choice to serve does not make their death for a bad cause any less tragic. This President has made poor choices and the innocent have paid for it. As they say, those who fight the war are the ones who least want it.
