Elections

You know you suck when you lose the election to a dead lady… especially when the voters KNOW she’s dead.

I can certainly admire his technique; his ability to strategize… but I still think he’s a crook.

The next generation of Rove-clones is out in suburbia America launching and tweaking political attacks to win the coming elections. They’re like the little bugs in Matrix… hunting down the feeble and vulnerable candidates and removing them from the grid.

images of Osama bin Laden and Zacarias Moussaoui. Finally comes the real target of Howell’s attack: Harold Ford Jr., the Democrat locked in a close race for the Senate seat in Tennessee. Over an edgy hip-hop soundtrack, the ad castigates Ford for voting against border security and the Patriot Act. “No wonder Harold Ford has been rated the most liberal congressman from Tennessee,” the narrator intones. The ad ends with the word “liberal” pulsing on the screen as a shadowy figure walks down a long hallway.

Some Princeton researchers made a demonstration video of how it’s possible to steal an election with a Diebold voting machine in under a minute. Anyone with physical access to the machine can put in malicious software to steal votes—such as election workers who have unsupervised access to the machines before elections. All they have to do is open up the machine with a key (or pick the lock), remove the old memory card, stick in your own memory card, boot the machine, and it automatically installs any software that was on the memory card.

I think President Carter is right on with his remarks. Loyalty is certainly admirable… i.e. Lieberman’s dedication to Bush, but blind loyalty is just plain stupid. People want leaders who are capable of making the right decision and having the courage to reevaluate those decisions and change course if needed. Leadership isn’t about the appearance of being right… it’s about actually being right. Blind loyalty gets people killed. Lieberman doesn’t give a rat’s ass about the conflict in Iraq, he’s supporting President Bush so that he can have his way when it comes to supporting Israel.

former President Carter, who offered a blistering critique of Lieberman’s support for the Iraq war. “He was one of the originators of public statements that misled the American people into believing that the Iraqi war was justified,” the former Democratic president said on CNN’s “Larry King Live.”

“He’s joined in with the Republican spokespersons by saying that Democrats who disagree are really supporting terrorism,” Carter said. “So for all these reasons, I’ve lost my confidence in Joe Lieberman and don’t wish to see him re-elected.”

I ran across a good commentary by Lou Dobbs. Very well put.

Sometimes I get annoyed that while it’s easy to criticize the President for failing to have a plan to succeed, we must not forget that our government is made up of several branches and 2 opposing parties. In this election season, the leaders can’t simply say the other side is wrong; the leaders must propose a solution and lead us out of the fight. Soldiers are dying while we sit around and point fingers.

The American people cannot be reasonably asked by this president or this secretary of defense to “stay the course” without evidence of a strategy to successfully prosecute the war and defeat the radical Islamist enemy. Otherwise, why are we there? The loyal opposition on Capitol Hill cannot reasonably ask the American people to elect them without articulating a clear new direction and offering a concrete plan for victory. Otherwise, why do we even have a loyal opposition?

Via the Democratic National Committee:

The ability of our citizens to engage in the political process is only as meaningful as the tools they have to do it.

Special interests and lobbyists have the money and power to dominate our political system — and that’s exactly what they’ve done under this Republican president and Republican Congress.

So today we officially launch a suite of tools in an unprecedented and permanent drive to empower Americans to take back our political process.

Why today? The Tuesday after Labor Day traditionally starts the homestretch of the election season. This year Americans face a choice of historic importance, and with the launch of these new tools you have more ability than ever to affect the outcome.

But the work we do now for 2006 must be the foundation for a permanent Democratic Party infrastructure, and these tools won’t go away after Election Day. We’re going to continue to expand them, and the networks of activism that solidify will power a 50-state Democratic Party for the first time in a generation.

That’s why our brand new suite of web tools is called PartyBuilder.

When it comes to the mechanics of running elections, Democrats have in the past been accused of showing up to a gunfight with only a knife.

No more.

In this new era of using the Internet to empower people to take meaningful action, we’re way ahead of the Republicans. We’re bringing the Democratic Party online and asking you to take control by putting more power into your hands than they ever could.

Here are a few of the things you can do:

* Social Networking: Create a profile and connect with your network of friends and fellow Democrats
* Groups: Create or join a group, which will have its own listserv, common blog and events
* Search: Easily search for other people or groups in your area
* Blogging: Create and promote your own blog
* Events: Plan and manage your own real-world events
* Fundraising: Fundraise from your contacts and track your progress
* Letters to Editors: Easily connect with local, regional and national papers
* Petitions: Make your voice heard on important issues
* Messaging: Send and receive messages while keeping your email address private

And it’s all tied together with an easy-to-use PartyBuilder Dashboard — a simple, straightforward management center where you can keep everything organized.

If you already have a login and password for Democrats.org, you can use the same one. If you haven’t explored our web site before, now is the time to create your account and explore:

From its voter suppression activities in Ohio, Florida and elsewhere to its scorched-earth political tactics nationwide, the Republican Party knows that it wins when people don’t participate.

We choose a different path. We know that when more people participate, we win.

This year hundreds of thousands of new voters are joining the Democratic Party. They’re joining a party of tens of millions of Americans that’s more active than it’s been in a generation — one that’s growing in all 50 states.

We’re seeing a new generation of Americans become involved in politics, and they’re becoming Democrats.

With PartyBuilder, they will have the tools to organize, communicate and build a community of Democrats committed to making America better.

Now let’s get to work!

Thank you,

Howard

Governor Howard Dean, M.D.

The DNC is studying the changes to the Presidential nomination process with possible changes to the state primaries line-up, moving some states ahead of New Hampshire, the traditional first-in-the-nation. Being a New Hampshire native myself, I’ve always enjoyedand been proud of how seriousNH takes it’s politics. It’s hard to describe without actually beingthere. When election time comes around, NH isalive with debates, town meetings, living room meet-ups and street rallies. So this upcoming vote by a DemocraticNational Committee commission will be a pivotal decicion for NH.
New Hampshire Democrats launched a public campaign yesterday to preserve their first-in-the-nation presidential primary against intrusions from rival states and the work of a Democratic Party commission. Granite State partisans said the quadrennial presidential spotlight is as vital to the identity of their state as the Derby is to Kentucky and the Statute of Liberty is to New York.

I’m just passing on an open letter Michael Moore (the film director) wrote today to all those who voted for George Bush. Regardless of what your personal feelings are for Michael Moore or for George Bush for that matter, his thoughts and comments are valid. His perspective may be one sided but his statements are still true and accurate none-the-less.

Take a few minutes and read the letter A Letter to All Who Voted for George W. Bush from Michael Moore.

Democratic bloggers say they are beginning to transform the way political campaigns are run, pointing to their recent success in raising more than $550,000 for Democratic congressional candidate Paul Hackett, a Marine veteran of the Iraq war, who came within 4,000 votes of defeating Republican Jean Schmidt two weeks ago in a special election in a heavily Republican district in Ohio.

I think it’s really just the rapid exchange of information. First it was electronic communication in the form of telemarketers, fax transmissions and email to supplement the traditional door-to-door and town meetings. Now it’s blogging. It’s just an extension of the way we communicate providing more people with a voice. I’m not sure it’s any sort of new revelation, just a greater use of an emerging technology.

It definitely helps raise campaign funds. Howard Dean proved that.
